BEST SAW FOR THE MONEY TOO [Posted on 2006-06-22] I'm a professional woodworker and own a half dozen miter saws and several different brands. Like many other people, I feel the sliders are great, particularly if you are doing carpentry. But, they can be a bit cumbersome to move in and out of the truck and job site and most don't come close to the accuracy and the excellent features included in the 36-412. For doing crown and cornice molding this unit really does the job nicely. For those that may not be aware, many of the problems you may be having can be simply solved by fastening up to a 3/4" x 4" MDF chip breaker to the fences that will adjust independently along with each fence/back stop and can be trimmed and adjusted as needed. This will help you visually line up your cuts and put the work piece closer to the center of the blade arch. If the fences aren't quite true, you can always slip paper shims in between the aluminum fence and MDF as needed. This is actually a very handy trick for most saws that have sliding/adjustable fences. We found the unit to be true out of the box as well and were immediately impressed with the thoughtful design and quality of the sliding fence lock and crown stop mechanisms.
Very intellegent design [Posted on 2007-01-02] I picked up one of these at Menards for $225 (obsolete model close-out plus 10% off) and am very impressed with the intellegence of design and quality of the saw. Clearly this was not designed by the same people who design some of Delta's consumer/handyman line (a good thing). Everything is tight with no slop at all. The dual bevel feature is welcome with a front-access locking lever (brilliant). The mounting holes are in line which means that it will fit any miter saw stand without adapters. The carrying handle is located so it is hairly easy to heft the saw. The fence is nice and tall (brilliant), There are holes to mount an aux. fence (brilliant). The crown moulding clamps are a very good idea (OK, brilliant). No laser, but those things are rarely designed such that they are useful in anything but dim light, if at all. Thought about a Hitachi C10FSH 10" slider, but the added bulk, cost ($370 even as a refurb on eBay), slight additional functionality that I would rarely, if ever use, and less user-friendly design made it an easy choice for the Delta. This thing is really good. Only negative is the marginal blade it comes with.
Best saw I found for the money. [Posted on 2007-01-22] I was looking for a nice well made miter saw. At first I was looking at sliding miter saws, but decided that their bulk was prohibitive in my smaller shop. I looked at many different brands, Makita, Dewalt, Bosch, Ridgid, just to name a few. I talked to friends in the construction business. Every one had a different opinion as to why they chose their saw, everyone had different needs and expectations.
Then one day i went to visit a friend at a local cabinet shop. Every saw was a Delta. I had not even thought to look at them. I asked how they liked the Delta's. Pretty much every person in the shop liked them, and recommended them. Time to do some research.
I soon found that the accuracy and durability of the Delta miter saws was very high. I shopped around and soon discovered that the 36-412 is a discontinued model being replaced by the 36-422L. A local hardware store had them on sale for $225. This was much cheaper than the Dewalt 716 I was previously considering.
I've had the saw for over a week now, mainly doing home projects, like building shelves for the basement. The saw was pretty much set up right out of the box. Only the left fence was off a little bit. It took 5 minutes to have the fence square with the blade. The blade the saw comes with is ok for most home projects, but if you plan on doing finish work, I would purchase a better blade. So far this saw has exceeded my expectations on every level. I have no regrets other than not purchasing the Delta stand.:-) If you need a heavy duty miter saw, the Delta 36-412 is the way to go, especially for the clearance price.
Best Miter Saw I Have Owned [Posted on 2007-06-08] Since these are no longer available, I bought one of these on eBay for $299 with free shipping and all I can say is WOW! This is a very well engineered power tool. I own a Dewalt SCMS and love the Dewalt, but the Delta is a more accurate saw. I plan to continue using the Dewalt for construction cutting and the Delta for cabinet and trim cutting. I put a Dewalt 80 tooth thick kerf (not yellow) blade on the Delta and the cuts are glass smooth. The dust collection isn't great, but it's similar to my Dewalt.
Here is what I like about the saw:
* Crown Stops pop-up from the table and are easy to adjust. They work!
* Changing the blade is easy and the guard is held into the up position.
* Left and right sliding fence adjustment is so smooth with a lever flip.
* Everything is tight, straight and flat. Well beyond any other saw I've owned.
* Fence is tall
* Up front bevel control
* 1/4 twist miter lock
* Even the paint is above normal. Looks like powder coating to me.
* I smile with every cut!!!
What I don't like:
* Would like better dust collection
* Can't come up with anything else.
Would I buy again? Without question!!!
if you see this saw runaway! [Posted on 2007-06-28] Don't buy this saw. I've had mine two years its broken twice. This is a dangerous tool. The gears have busted twice. Get a belt drive saw. When the gear bust the piece of wood is violenty thrown from your hand. The crown stops are a nice feature. I have now bought a Dewalt 716 to replace it. I got my Delta at sears cause it was on sale for $300. Its not worth it it costs Over a hundred to fix the busted gear. This saw is dangerous don't buy it. I'm only post a review here because I research most of my tool purchases here.
